Women leaving the justice system often face complex and compounding barriers when trying to rebuild their lives, especially when it comes to finding meaningful, stable employment. The Success Works Program is designed to break down these barriers by offering targeted support, skills development, and mentoring. Brittany’s* story is a powerful example of how, with the right tools and encouragement, women can overcome the odds and create lasting change for themselves and their families.

When Brittany joined the Success Works Program, she was ready to start fresh. The moment she was released from custody, she was determined to rebuild her life but faced significant barriers to employment. With limited work history, low self-esteem, and the stigma of a criminal record, Brittany wasn’t sure where to begin.

Through the Breaking Barriers program, she attended job readiness workshops and was matched with a volunteer mentor. The relationship was transformational. Her mentor provided both practical support and emotional encouragement helping Brittany prepare for interviews, improve her resume, and stay positive during the job search process.

From the beginning, what stood out most was Brittany’s quiet but unwavering determination. Despite the challenges she faced, she showed up to every session, engaged fully in workshops, and committed to changing her path. Her inner strength and willingness to do the work became the foundation for everything that followed.

Eight weeks into the mentor program, Brittany secured a part-time administration role with a supportive employer from the Success Works network. The employer believed in second chances and provided a welcoming, inclusive workplace where she felt safe and respected.

Since starting her role, Brittany has gone from strength to strength. She has received positive feedback from manager, taken on additional responsibilities, and is now exploring the option of part-time study to grow her career. She continues to stay in touch with her mentor, who remains a trusted support.

Importantly, this progress has extended beyond work. With newfound stability and confidence, Brittany has recently started the process of regaining access to her child. This is a life-changing step, and one she credits to having secure employment, a supportive work environment, and someone in her corner who believed in her.

Brittany’s journey shows the powerful impact of combining tailored support with a woman’s own inner will to change her life. With the right environment, meaningful work, and belief in her potential, transformation becomes not only possible but sustainable.
