Tash has been connected with Success Works for over a year, moving through several employment opportunities before finding a role where she felt genuinely supported, respected and able to grow. Her story highlights the importance of safe and supportive workplaces, and the difference it can make when someone is recognised for their strengths, given choice and control, and supported to move forward in a way that feels right for them.
Success Works: Hi Tash, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you’re doing now?
Tash: Hi, I’m Tash. I currently work full-time as a Cleaning and Hygiene Team Leader for veterans. I’ve been in this role for almost nine months now, and it’s been an incredible journey.
Success Works: What was life like for you before connecting with Success Works?
Tash: Before Success Works, I found it difficult to talk openly about my past. I was carrying a lot of worry about being judged or not being given a fair chance. I wanted to be seen as a whole person, not only by what was written on paper. That made taking the next step into employment feel really daunting at times, because I wasn’t sure whether employers would look beyond my history.
Success Works: How did Success Works support you through that?
Tash: The program helped me build confidence to share my story in a way that felt safe for me, and only when I was ready. I learned what I felt comfortable disclosing and what employers actually have the right to know. That made a huge difference. It helped me feel more in control of my own story, rather than feeling like my past had to define me.
Success Works: Tell us about your current role. What does your job involve?
Tash: My role takes me all over Western Sydney. I lead a team and we support veterans in their homes. We help with everyday tasks like cleaning, basic household duties, and even grocery shopping. It’s really rewarding because we’re making a direct difference in people’s lives every day.
Success Works: That sounds like a meaningful responsibility. How has stepping into a leadership role been for you?
Tash: It’s been amazing, honestly. I’ve never been in a team leader role before, so it’s opened up so many doors for me. I’ve learned so much, not just about the job itself, but about leadership, communication, and supporting others. It’s helped me recognise my own strengths, keep growing, and see a clear pathway to move up within the company.
Success Works: How do you feel about yourself now compared to before?
Tash: I feel very different. Before, I worried that people would only focus on my past. Now, I feel more able to speak about my experiences in a way that feels right for me, without shame. I’ve realised that people can and will see you for who you are, not just what’s written down. That’s been really empowering.
Success Works: What does success mean to you today?
Tash: Success for me is being able to move forward without fear, to help others, and to keep growing. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited for what’s next.
Tash’s story is a reminder to employers of the impact they can have when they look beyond someone’s past and create workplaces built on respect, safety and opportunity. By offering fair chances, supportive supervision and room to grow, employers can help people bring their strengths to work and build meaningful, sustainable careers. If your organisation is ready to open doors and be part of that change, consider partnering with Success Works to support more women like Tash into employment.
