At Success Works, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life—especially women who have faced the many challenges of having a criminal record and who are ready for a fresh start.
When we first met this remarkable woman Hazel she had spent years battling shame and self-doubt. Through our workshops, mentoring, and strong employer partnerships, she found the confidence to return to study, learn new skills, and reimagine her future. This is her story—a powerful reminder of what’s possible when women are given a fair chance.
Q: How did you first hear about Success Works?
I first heard about Success Works through Dress for Success. Eleni, who was working there at the time, introduced me to the program. I’m originally from New Zealand—I’m Māori—and I’ve been living in Australia since the early 1980s.
Q: What was life like before joining Success Works?
Before I found Success Works, I had spent about 14 years in a really tough headspace. I carried a lot of shame because of my criminal record and had the mindset that I was hopeless. I didn’t see much of a future for myself, especially when it came to employment or further education.
Q: How has Success Works helped you?
If I hadn’t found Success Works, I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to go back to school. I might never have built a proper work history or gained the references I now have. I’ve even picked up a completely new skill—driving a truck—which I never thought I’d be able to do.
Success Works really supported me by holding workshops and, most importantly, connecting me with employers who are willing to give people like me—a person with a criminal background—a fair chance.
Q: What has your experience as a mentee been like?
I’ve been a mentee for about six months now, and towards the end of the process, it felt like a spotlight was being shone on parts of myself I hadn’t looked at before. Things like volunteering started to feel possible, even meaningful.
Q: What are you working on now?
I’m currently halfway through a Certificate IV in Community Services at TAFE, with the goal of going on to study an Advanced Diploma in the same field. I’ve already completed a Certificate III in Community Services.
Q: Is there anything you think Success Works could improve or add to their programs?
They’re doing great work, but maybe more personalised programs—especially ones that support people just post-release—could make a real difference too.
